20 Interesting Horse Facts

Horses are fascinating animals and being a “horse person” I thought I knew almost everything about these amazing animals. I’ve recently been digging deeper and came across these interesting facts about horses and it reminded me that there is always something to learn. I found out many things I had never learned, and I thought I would share my experience. Here are 21 different interesting facts that you may not know about horses:

  1. Horses can sleep both lying down and standing
  2. The oldest horse on record was “Old Billy”. He died at age 62, while most horses live to around 25
  3. A horse’s “frog” (triangular shape on hoof) acts as a shock absorber and also helps to pump blood back up its leg when pressure is applied on the hoof.


4. Horses are capable of seeing 360 degrees at once because of the placement of their eyes
5. Horses produce approximately 10 gallons of saliva a day
6. Scientists believe that the first known ancestor of the horse lived about 50 million years ago. This prehistoric horse is called Eohippus and had four padded toes on the front legs and three padded toes on the back legs. It was about the size of a golden retriever
7. You can tell the temperature of a horse by feeling its ears. Cold ears mean a cold horse!
8. Horses have the largest eyes of all land mammals
9. Horses cannot vomit
10. The average horse heart weighs 9-10 pounds
11. A horse’s teeth take up a larger amount of space in their head than their brain


12. Horses are unable to breathe through their mouths
13. Horses have 16 muscles in each ear allowing them to rotate their ears 180 degrees
14. Groups of horses don’t lie down at the same time because one horse always keeps watch for potential danger
15. The horse’s closest relative is the rhinoceros
16. Horses can run within hours of birth
17. Male horses have more teeth than female horses
18. An adult horse’s brain weights 22 oz, about half that of a human
19. Horses drink at least 25 gallons of water a day
20. Horses with pink skin can get a sunburn
